Frequently Asked Questions:
What is GRVL DRMA?
The original GRVL DRMA was a grassroots attempt at creating the most difficult bicycle race in the midwest. Turns out it was way too hard. So we decided to shorten the ride to make it more fun and accessible.
This is a free event in the style of original gravel “races” like Almanzo or Dicky Scramble. There is no laser satellite timing or fully stocked aid stations. Come on out and ride at whatever pace you find enjoyable.
We strive to keep this event on rural gravel roads as much as possible. Be safe! Make good decisions!
Is this a Gravel race?
It’s not a typical gravel race. GRVL DRMA is an experience - There’s gravel, there’s dirt, there’s MMR, there’s water crossings, and there’s pavement. It’s about spending a day on a bicycle chasing adventure.
When and Where is GRVL DRMA held?
May 18, 2024 in Plum City, Wisconsin. 8am sharp.
What makes GRVL DRMA unique?
Race it, ride it, just have fun and please don’t sue us.
The region escaped the flattening effects of glaciation during the last ice age and is consequently characterized by steep forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, spring-fed waterfalls and cold-water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region or New England than those of the broader Midwest.

Who can participate?
Anybody who is physically and mentally capable of completing the course. INCLUDING repairing mechanicals, finding your way if you get lost, and properly feeding yourself along the way. Please show up at the start line with fresh sealant in your tires, new brake pads, a seat pack full of tubes and tools, and a nutrition plan.
What is the course like?
Extraordinary hilly. When you reach the top of a climb you’ll likely plummet down a descent and then start climbing again. As noted above, the course will feature just about every kind of surface the midwest has to offer. There is more pavement than a course like Ragnarok 105 or Filthy 50, but this is still largely a gravel event. Course route will change year to year.
Will the course be marked/ Can I use GPS?
No markings. No closed roads. GPX route will be provided. Be prepared, have a backup.
Is outside assistance allowed?
Choose your own adventure. Outside assistance is allowed as long as it doesn’t violate the spirit of the experience. Feel free to stash jars of pickle juice out on the course, but please recover them after the race.
What is the best bike choice ?
Gravel bike with 38mm tires? Hardtail Mountain bike with 44mm slicks? Cyclocross bike on Chicane tubulars? Newfangled “allroad bike” with 30mm tubeless tires and 47 gear options. There are lots of ways to go about doing this one.
Make sure you have gearing that will get you up the hills, brakes to get you down the hills, and a tried and true bike fit.
Is there a shorter option?
You can go home whenever you want. In the event of terrible weather we’ll likely alter the course.
How do I sign up?
GRVL DRMA is full for 2024. It’s a small event with a limited staff of volunteers. Thank you for your understanding.
Why “GRVL DRMA”?
Have you been paying attention to the gravel race scene for the past 10 years? It’s axiomatic
